Female Speaker: I would like you to tell these people about your background. And why, and how you know that the arts make children and adults smarter, more creative, less violent, less likely to get in trouble, and why we need more arts in the United States.

Kamala Harris: Many, many years ago now- I think over ten years ago- I actually started a mentor program for kids, and I adopted inner city schools, for them to be mentored around museums and art. I went to a fine arts high school for a period of time. It is just… It is a no-brainer for me. And it is very clear that if we want our children to thrive, we need to give them a variety of outlets for them to express themselves. It is something that allows children to build their confidence. It is about a very significant form of nurturing their creative thought and ther abilities. You know when we talk about STEM, I actually talk about STEAM, which is science, technology, engineering, art, and math. And it really just folds into my larger agenda, which is really one of the main reasons I’m running, which is that we have got to really invest in America’s public education system.
